Chromis Fiberoptics CTO, Dr. Whitney White, to Present at SPIE: Photonics West Conference

Dr. Whitney White

Chromis Fiberoptics announced today that Dr. Whitney White, founder and CTO of their organization, will be giving a presentation entitled “Plastic fiber AOCs for UHD video” at the 2018 Photonics West OPTCO Conference in Session 4: Transmission I on Wednesday, January 31st beginning at 3:40 p.m.

According to Dr. White, “As ultrahigh definition (UHD) video moves to ever-higher resolution and ever-higher data rates, optical transmission solutions become attractive at increasingly short distances. In recent years, active optical cables (AOCs) have been developed with plastic optical fibers (POF) to meet these needs. During my presentation I will discuss these new and exciting approaches to POF AOCs.”

Chromis’ proprietary technology and system approach to design and production aim to minimize the cost and optimize the performance and durability of GI-POF AOCs, compared to similar products made from glass optical fiber. Highlighting the benefits, attendees will learn how:

  • Tuning both polymer synthesis and extrusion can optimize the optical and mechanical properties of GI-POF.
  • Chromis patented GigaPOF® monolithic ribbon technology reduces the cost of AOC assembly.
  • Lower bill-of-materials and assembly costs means less expensive AOCs.

About Photonics West

Held at The Moscone Center in San Francisco, California, Photonics West OPTO is the world’s largest annual event for the photonics, laser, and biomedical optics industries. A fast-growing networking forum, researchers from a wide spectrum of optoelectronic and photonic disciplines converge to exchange ideas, challenge results and learn new concepts. Presenters will address the most current developments and research in a broad range of optoelectronic technologies and their integration into a variety of industrial and non-industrial applications. To learn more about the event, click here

About Chromis Fiberoptics

Chromis began as the POF research team at Lucent Technologies Bell Laboratories in 1996. In 2001, Furukawa Electric Co. Ltd. bought Lucent’s Optical Fiber Solutions business, becoming part of the new majority-owned subsidiary called OFS. In June 2004, the POF research team leadership concluded a management buyout of the OFS POF business to form Chromis Fiberoptics. Today, Chromis Fiberoptics is the leading provider of high-transparency, low-attenuation, tight-bending GigaPOF® Graded-Index Polymer Optical Fiber (GI-POF), GigaPOF® bulk cable, and GigaPOF® Active Optical Cables (AOCs). Chromis products are used for high-speed data transmission in digital signage, commercial and residential audio/video, mobile computing, consumer electronics, data center, medical and transportation and industrial automation applications.
